Family Medicine Scholarships

About: Colorado Family Medicine Scholarships are available through the CAFP Foundation. Medical students and family medicine residents in Colorado are eligible for these funds. While urgent requests are generally discouraged in favor of the deadlines below, CAFP Foundation will consider reimbursement or awarding earlier funds if an applicant would otherwise be unable to participate.

What is it? Join family medicine physicians in Colorado for an extended weekend of learning and networking. Students and residents can sit in on sessions, visit with exhibitors, network with doctors, and enjoy a beautiful location with lots of additional activities. Scholarships will cover the cost of conference registration, along with hotel fees and other travel expenses.

Eligibility: Medical student or family medicine resident in Colorado. Awardees will be asked to work with Director of Communications and Member Engagement, Emily Bishop, to share their experience with CAFP members.

Deadline: March 1

Funds available: Up to 6 full-ride scholarships will be awarded, covering conference registration, food, and hotel. Additional partial scholarships may also be available.

National Conference: Family Medicine Resident and Medical Student Congresses

What is it? Family medicine’s premiere conference for family medicine residents and medical students, sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Each year, the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP) chooses up to two students and two residents to serve as Colorado’s delegates at the conference. Delegates will receive funds to cover the cost of registration, as well as travel expenses.

Eligibility: Medical student or family medicine resident in Colorado. Awardees will be asked to work with Director of Communications and Member Engagement, Emily Bishop, to share their experience with CAFP members.

Deadline: May 1

Funds available: CAFP will cover airfare, registration, hotel, food and other travel expenses. Funds per applicant may depend on the number of applications.

Martha Illige Scholarship for Women Physicians’ Wellness 

What is it? In honor of Dr. Martha Illige and her sustained commitment over many years to medical education, resident training, and the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP). CAFP sponsors a woman family medicine resident and resident faculty dyad from a Colorado family medicine program to attend conferences promoting wellness for women physicians. Eligible events may include the Women’s Balance Conference, AAFP Physician Health & Well-Being Conference, or similar event.

Eligibility: Women family medicine resident and residency faculty dyad in Colorado. Awardees will be asked to work with Director of Communications and Member Engagement, Emily Bishop, to share their experience with CAFP members.

Deadline: Awardees will be chosen quarterly. Those deadlines are:

  • February 1
  • May 1
  • August 1
  • November 1

What is it? The scholarship supports residents interested in developing leadership skills in family medicine advocacy. Funds are available to attend:

Preference is given for candidates with demonstrated career goals in the following areas: healthcare for all; tobacco prevention; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (including the diversity of having a disability); and Graduate Medical Education reform.

Eligibility: Family medicine resident in Colorado. Awardees will be asked to work with Director of Communications and Member Engagement, Emily Bishop, to share their experience with CAFP members.

General Activities and Events Scholarship Opportunities

What is it? Medical students and family medicine residents may apply for funds to assist with a number of other conferences and education opportunities, including:

  • AAFP Family Medicine Advocacy Summit, Congress of Delegates, Family Medicine Experience, Society of Teachers in Family Medicine
  • Advocacy activities and events
  • Educational and research activities and events
  • Leadership activities and events

Eligibility: Medical student or family medicine resident in Colorado. Awardees will be asked to work with Director of Communications and Member Engagement, Emily Bishop, to share their experience with CAFP members.

Deadline: Awardees will be chosen quarterly. Those deadlines are:

  • February 1
  • May 1
  • August 1
  • November 1

Funds Available: Up to $2,000/year. Funds per applicant may depend on the number of applications.
