Virtual CME: COPIC Presents: AI: The Double-Edged Scalpel

February 7 @ 12:15 pm 1:15 pm

Topic: AI: The Double-Edged Scalpel

Presenter: Dr. Eric Zacharias

Topic Information:
A snapshot of uses, risks and the developmental trajectory of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare.

The term, “Artificial Intelligence” refers to engineering techniques that use neural networks or machine learning to build software that imitates, emulates or simulates activities that are traditionally considered “human.” Such applications have gradually been introduced in healthcare over decades. But in the last year or so, there has been hyper exponential growth of a subset of AI applications known as “Large Language Models” (“LLMs”), “Generative Language Models,” or “Generative Pretrained Transformers,” that interact with users through natural language in sophisticated and frankly astonishing ways. These applications—and customized variants designed for medical uses—have become the most rapidly adopted products in human history. LLMs today provide functions that were nearly inconceivable in 2021. They have unprecedented, disruptive implications for science, business, education, journalism, art, entertainment, warfare and every form of social transaction. This program surveys use cases for LLMs and other AI applications in healthcare, from the perspectives of safety, liability and regulation. It anticipates transformations in provider and patient interactions and healthcare operations. And it touches on ethical and philosophical consequences of interacting with entities that convincingly simulate—and often surpass—human reasoning.

Learning Objectives:
1) Describe selected, current and emerging applications of AI in healthcare, and some wider implications for society.
2) Identify key risks and limitations of using AI for medical tasks, such as communication, documentation and decision-support.
3) Evaluate trends and implications of AI for patient safety, professional liability and regulatory policy
