Congratulations! Together, Family Physicians and the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP) have been able to reach over 250,000 Colorado fifth graders with the Tar Wars message, helping children decide to live healthier, tobacco-free lives. The program focuses on the short-term, image-based consequences of tobacco use and how to think critically about tobacco advertising. A follow up poster contest at the school, state, and national levels is conducted to reinforce the Tar Wars message. Participation in Tar Wars is easy for you as a community physician. Preparation requires 15 to 20 minutes of reviewing the curriculum. The CAFP will do the rest. The program itself requires 1 hour of your time for one fifth grade class, or one morning or afternoon for the school's entire fifth grade. Why should you as a busy Family Physician participate? Preventing tobacco use, the leading cause of preventable death in the world today, is the most important impact that we can make in our communities' future health. Just as importantly, you'll find Tar Wars to be a fun and energizing experience that you will thoroughly enjoy. Join us, for the health of it!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey J. Cain, MD
Tar Wars Medical Director
